S.F. Seen As Perfect Host City For Summer Olympics - in 2088

Those who’ve lived here long enough might remember that San Francisco really, desperately wanted to host the 2016 Olympics.

In 2005, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom put forth a bid that would have included the entire Bay Area participating in the mega-sporting event in some capacity. A year later, after the city and 49ers couldn’t figure out how to build a new stadium in San Francisco, the bid was withdrawn and the dream died.

Fast-forward 10 years, and the Olympics are in Brazil — and San Francisco has another failed hosting attempt under its belt, having lost to Los Angeles last year as the U.S. bid city for the 2024 Games. But hey, there’s some good (if frightening) news to report: Come 2088, San Francisco might be the last city in the entire United States that has a climate suitable for the Summer Olympics.

Filmmaker’s Time-Lapse Video Shows Stunning SF Fog

Loaded question: What’s the most iconic thing about San Francisco? Those are certainly fighting words in some circles, but mention a certain weather phenomenon and you’ll probably get few arguments against.

The city’s fog is, to put it mildly, legendary. It has its own Twitter handle and Wikipedia page. It delays summer until September. And it has inspired writers, artists, and entrepreneurs for generations. What’s left to say? Probably nothing. So let’s forget about the words and focus on the images.

That’s what a guy named Matt Maniego did. This week, he released Paradise II, his second love-letter type movie of San Francisco. It took him three-and-a-half years to shoot — in time lapse — and six months to edit. The result of that dedication is a two-and-a-half-minute movie that is simply serene to behold.

Of course we’ve all seen countless images of San Francisco fog, but this video takes it up a notch.

Millennial Problems: Most Pokemon-Obsessed City Is NOT S.F.

We stumbled upon something this week that has us utterly flummoxed. How, for the love of all things Squirtle, did San Francisco only register eighth on a list of Top 10 Cities Most Interested in Pokemon Go?!

Well, millennial friends, it certainly did. By the grace of Metapod, the good folks at Internet Service Partners used Google Trends to determine which states and cities are most obsessed with the mobile phenomenon that has led to, among many hard-to-believe stories, an outright ban in Iran, a new provision in New York preventing paroled sex offenders from playing the game, and the shooting death of a man in San Francisco.

S.F. Renters Partying Like It’s 2009

If you’re currently trying to rent an apartment in San Francisco, this news might make you laugh: The market is cooling so much that landlords are offering generous perks for signing a lease.

But to anyone considering a 400-square-foot studio for several thousand a month, the idea that things are getting better for tenants is comical. But apparently it’s true, according to Yahoo Finance, which proclaims that incentives for potential tenants are at levels not seen since the days of the Great Recession. The catch is, of course, these landlords seem more interested in renting to tech workers than, say, people who don’t work in tech.

Yesterday's Crimes: Rolling Stones, Hells Angels and Busted Heads at Altamont

A melee broke out on Dec. 6, 1969 in front of the hastily constructed stage at the Altamont Speedway as the Rolling Stones played "Sympathy for the Devil." Several Hells Angels jumped into the crowd. Sawed-off pool cues came down on skulls and boots broke bones. Somewhere in all the dust and tangled humanity was the glint of a gun followed by the flash of a blade.

Mick Jagger in a two-tone satin blouse resembled a frightened harlequin as he struggled to calm a crowd of 300,000 people, many of them hard tripping on acid, mescaline and Lord knows what else.

"Everybody be cool now," he said after getting Keith Richards to stop riffing on a slightly out-of-tune guitar.

"People! Who's fighting and what for?" he pleaded.

S.F. Residents Beware: Razor Scooter Thug Is Roaming Streets

In San Francisco, you never know which Razor scooter-riding thug you’ll run into next.

Police are searching for a man they describe as 40 to 50 years old, likely with a blood-covered little Razor under one of his arms. (We added that last part.) On Monday afternoon, some guy allegedly mowed down a 54-year-old man who was walking on a sidewalk near Van Ness Avenue and Hayes Street. Instead of helping the guy get up, this super-predator proceeded to beat him senseless before quietly riding away.

The Giants aren’t winning many games on the field these days, but maybe they’ll have better luck in a courtroom.

San Francisco Giants Enterprises, the entity that operates AT&T Park, is being sued by a woman who claims she was injured by a ballpark employee who was driving around in a motorized cart during a Beyoncé and Jay Z tour stop in 2014, according to TMZ. Live Nation is also named in the lawsuit because the cart driver apparently worked for the concert promoter for the On the Run tour.

SF Police Union Just Won’t Stop

In the latest issue of the San Francisco Police Officers Association journal, union president Martin Halloran implores whomever is reading to follow the advice of Dallas Police Chief David Brown and “[b]ecome a part of the solution. Serve your community. Don't be a part of the problem.”

Halloran goes on to say “recent acts of cowardly cold blooded murder of police officers have the potential to drive a wedge between law enforcement officers and the communities that we serve.”

It’s good advice, and he’s right about the impact those recent police officer deaths in Dallas and Louisiana are having on cities and towns across the country.

“But we will not let this happen,” Halloran continues. “We refuse to. Instead, we will continue to work hand in hand to forge ahead, to promote peace within our community and unity in our cities.”

Millennial Problems: The ‘Pussy Generation’

Posted By on Thu, Aug 4, 2016 at 4:13 PM

It’s certainly no secret that film legend Clint Eastwood is an old-time conservative. (Remember when he talked to the chair at the RNC in 2012? We’ve got you covered here.)

If that speech was awkward and uncomfortable - and yes, it was - at least it was funny too. And Clint apparently knows how to laugh, unlike folks whose ages make them part of the “Pussy Generation.”

Clint Eastwood stepped in a large pile of millennial shit recently during an interview with Esquire magazine that was published Wednesday. It should have been a nice family memory for the octogenarian, since he and his son Scott Eastwood were both featured in a lengthy Q&A that made the cover. But about halfway through, things went pear-shaped fast.

The interviewer and the Eastwoods are discussing instinct and authenticity in Hollywood when the interviewer says Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump (reading that still makes us laugh) is the latest politician to take a page from the Book of Badass that is Clint Eastwood. As if the floodgates had opened, Clint went off:

“[H]e's onto something, because secretly everybody's getting tired of political correctness, kissing up. That's the kiss-ass generation we're in right now. We're really in a pussy generation. Everybody's walking on eggshells. We see people accusing people of being racist and all kinds of stuff. When I grew up, those things weren't called racist.”

We’re not sure what “those things” are, but if it’s any of the things Trump has said about Mexicans and Muslims, then there’s no doubt they were racist. Trump insists he’s not racist, but plenty of media have disproved that theory (here’s but one example).

We digress. Clint also said some shit about millennials, and we all know what happens when baby gets put in a corner.

For good measure, the Esquire interviewer asked Clint to clarify what exactly is the “Pussy Generation”: “All these people that say, ‘Oh, you can't do that, and you can't do this, and you can't say that.’ I guess it's just the times,” Clint offered.

So Clint Eastwood is an old man - guys, he’s like 86 - and he thinks young people are entitled and thin-skinned. Where have we heard this before? Oh, right, EVERYWHERE. Still, millennials’ feelings were hurt. This millennial-focused website published one such diatribe against Clint. Twitter was a mess with digital tears. Scott Eastwood, who was participating in the interview as well, is a millennial at 30 years old, but he did not really join in the generational bashing.

Maybe Clint is right. Maybe we’re in an era of sensitivity.

It just so happens that today, the day after Clint’s mean words were disseminated, a writer at The Ringer posted a think-piece to Medium titled, “Can Millennials Take a Joke?” We encourage everyone to read it - just don’t be surprised when the joke is on you.

Yesterday's Crimes: The Disappearing Police Chief

There's been a high rate of turnover among police chiefs on both sides of the Bay lately, but there was a time when a San Francisco chief of police disappeared into the briny depths of the bay itself.

William J. Biggy was maybe the only honest man in a thoroughly corrupt city when he was appointed chief of police in September 1907. Mayor Eugene "Handsome Gene" Schmitz had been found guilty of extortion only three months earlier in June. Biggy's predecessor, Chief Jeremiah Dinan, was forced to resign while facing perjury charges.

Political boss Abe Ruef, the head crook who installed all these other crooks in office, was on trial in a massive corruption case where every member of the Board of Supervisors confessed to receiving bribes from Ruef and his bagmen. Biggy himself rose to prominence when he was appointed as to guard Ruef at the St. Francis Hotel because nobody who worked in the jails could be trusted with the job.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
